Eco-Friendly Habits for Eating & Drinking | Eco-Friendly Habits for a Healthier Backyard | Eco-Friendly Habits for Running Errands

With all the news about climate change and the heavy toll that pollution takes on our environment, it seems imperative that we each do our part to repair our Earth. But it can feel downright daunting to try to dramatically alter our lifestyles. After all, many of us were raised on the idea and reality of conveniences in the form of disposable everything.

Thankfully, there are little things we can do every day that will not only make us feel better about the way we choose to live, but also help make a collective dent in combating the negative effects of pollutants.

For Eating & Drinking

Reusable Drinking Straws

500 million plastic straws are used every single day in the United States.Sorry straw lovers. No doubt you’ve seen the reports of late that plastic straws present one of the biggest threats to marine life. Some 500 million straws are used every single day in the United States, with an average use time of only 20 minutes before the straw is thrown away and very likely ends up in our oceans by the tens of thousands. That is an astonishingly fast lifespan for an item that will be on the planet forever.

Enter the copper straw, an eco-friendly and on-trend straw for the most stylish of beverage drinkers who cannot do without their straws, but also want to preserve and protect our beautiful planet Earth. And it doesn’t just stop at copper, there are plenty of other sustainable straw options that include materials like: silicone, stainless steel, bamboo, and glass.

  • Copper Drinking Straw By Old Dutch International Shop Now

You don’t have to attempt to live a 100 percent zero-waste lifestyle to make reusable drinking straws a habit. Whether you want to bring them to work, a restaurant or give them as a gift to a party host, they’re perfect for on-the-go lifestyles because they’re super lightweight, and easily fit into a purse or lunchbox. Plus, you can stick a metal or glass straw into drinks for all temperatures so that you can enjoy your hot drinks when it’s cold and cold drinks when it’s hot.

Non-Plastic Water Bottles

According to data collected by GoPure, on average 50 billion plastic water bottles are consumed by Americans per year—that’s Americans alone, and 90 percent of plastic bottles in the US aren’t recycled.

One of the biggest ways to reduce your carbon footprint (and saving money while doing it) is parting ways with single-use plastic water bottles. For your drinking pleasure, consider investing in a high-quality steel or glass bottle that can be reused daily instead of consuming from and tossing disposable plastic bottles that end up in landfills, oceans, lakes, and streams and can take a century to degrade. It also saves you the headache of having to make sure to recycle them.

One other thing worth noting is that by avoiding plastic water bottle use, you escape the potential long-term, harmful effects of the chemicals like phthalates which have been linked to cancer and Bisphenol A (BPA) which has been tied closely to reproductive issues.

Reusable Food Storage Bags

If you pack lunches for school and work, and you enjoy leftovers, you are no stranger to disposable plastic bags and containers, many of which end up littering our shores and oceans.

Instead, consider colorful and heavy duty reusable silicone bags. They’re a safe, durable non-plastic food storage alternative that comes in a variety of sizes and still have that sought-after malleability factor so they’re easy to pack in lunch bags and boxes. Not to mention, they’re free of the toxic chemical compounds typically found in traditional, single-use plastic zip-lock bags.

Silicone storage bags are also highly convenient in that they are dishwasher safe and super easy to clean.

For the Backyard

Composting

What is composting? It may seem like something only for dedicated organic farmers, but composting is the latest in-home trend to reduce food waste and put good nutrients back into the soil. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up about 30 percent of what we throw away, and can be composted instead, creating an organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Here are the most common compostable everyday items in your home: Household waste that should be composted:

  • Unused or rotting fruits and veggies
  • Coffee grounds, coffee filters (that only consist of filter paper, plastic keurig cartridges should be recycled), tea bags (think your ready-made Liptons, Bigelows, Twinings, Yogis and Tazos of the world) and loose leaf tea filters
  • Nut shells from pistachios, peanuts, cashews, pecans, walnuts and more.
  • Egg shells
  • Weeds pulled from the lawn
  • Shredded newspaper and office paper (make sure these aren’t in color or other artificial dyes)
  • Shredded or torn brown paper lunch bags
  • Aged and deteriorating mulch like wood chips, cocoa beans, and straw
  • Grass clippings (filter these in thin layers if you aren’t using grass clippings for homemade mulch)

Household waste that should not be composted:

  • Heavily processed or packaged foods that are high in preservatives (crackers, cereal, bread)
  • Treated wood (that has been stained or painted) and any plants that have been doused in pesticides
  • Uneaten animal-based protein sources like fish scraps, leftover turkey, ham or chicken.
  • Diseased plants
  • Cooking oil, grease, and charcoal ash from the grill or other cooking activities.
  • Dog or cat waste

Making compost keeps waste products out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Other benefits of composting include:

  • Homemade, nutrition-packed source of soil food that requires minimal effort on your behalf.
  • Reduces lawn care cost of paying for annual fertilizer ingredients.
  • Protection against plant disease
  • Improves soil moisture and retention which promotes faster, healthier plant growth.
  • Facilitates rainwater infiltration and replenishes water levels in nearby ponds and lakes and other local bodies of water.
  • Improve community air quality by minimizing the amount of toxic chemicals (like methane and carbon dioxide) released in landfills.

Tips for Easy Composting

You’ll need to actively manage your compost pile on a regular basis (typically biweekly or once a month).

  • For pest control against small critters and insects, turn your compost every two to four weeks. If you keep your brown to green ratio level, pests will be less inclined to snoop through your compost pile.
  • Different items will decompose at different rates. To help level the playfield, chop up or dice larger items like sticks or thicker items that take longer to break down.
  • Water your compost pile at least once a week (depending on where you live) to keep it moist—though it shouldn’t be drenched.

How to Start Composting

There are many different sized composters, depending on the size of your family and how much food and yard waste your household produces. If you plan to start a compost pile in your backyard or side yard, you can easily create a DIY compost bin to use for years to come by following these simple steps: Step 1: Pick a level area of your yard with good drainage that sits in the partial sun or shade for the majority of the day. Step 2: Till the soil in the designated area to help expose the compost to the bare earth Step 3: Spread straw or other materials around 1 to 2 inches thick to help let the compost breath Step 4: Start adding compost materials by lawyering wet materials with dry materials to ensure nothing clumps together in a way that stalls the decomposition process Step 5: Water the compost, but don’t soak it. Step 6: To avoid allowing your compost contents to dry out or get too wet from precipitation, cover the compost using something highly permeable to air and water like wood. A cover isn’t always necessary depending on where you live, so as an alternative, you can insulate the area surrounding your compost with straw. Step 7: Churn the compost by flipping it with a pitchfork, raking stick or a different lawn care tool that can help expose all contents of the compost to oxygen every two to four weeks.

Composting Inside Your Home

For easy kitchen compost bin options, look for indoor composting bins to place near your kitchen.

For Errands

Reusable Grocery Bags

It’s time to ditch disposable grocery bags, whether paper or plastic. Luckily now, there are so many fashionable, reusable, and even insulated grocery totes such as the Packit Freezable Grocery Bag.

The cooling power is built into the base of the bag (just pop the bag in the freezer at night and it’s good to go in the morning), so there’s no need for ice packs to keep items chilled. Meat, dairy, fruits, veggies and frozen foods stay safe so you don’t have to stop home to unload them while you run errands.

Other unexpected advantages of a sustainable approach to grocery shopping:

  • They last a long time and will support you in grocery shopping activities for years to come.
  • You can typically bag the groceries yourself—which might be faster and more efficient than someone doing it for you.
  • You don’t run the risk of bags tearing in the parking lot, in the driveway or in the garage.
  • You can draw awareness to a brand you feel passionately about by carrying around their logo through the store.

ProTip: if you want to channel your inner French person, look into investing in a sizable canvas tote (or two) from your favorite local coffee shop, boutique or non-profit organization. Not only does it offer up a timeless, easy look that pairs well with any outfit during any season, it supports small businesses in your community too.

The New Year invites us to declutter, organize, and detox our lives! From our homes to our bodies, the fresh start of a new year is always promising. Whether you love a resolution or not, you can use the New Year to reset old habits and establish new ones.

This year, I have committed to exercising three times a week, drinking more water (and less wine), and getting more sleep. I have taken this month to deep clean my kitchen cabinets, organize, and detox our home!

You can detox your home this year with a few easy switches. Whether you want to make a big change or just a few simple swaps, these are some of my favorite products to help detox and clean my home!

Bee’s Wrap

Let me tell you about one of my favorite things: Bee’s Wrap! This product has become my favorite eco-friendly switch over the past year. Rather than using plastic wrap, I use Bee’s Wrap to cover and store food. Bee’s Wrap can be used on anything aside from meat, and works much better than plastic wrap! Use the heat from your hands to mold the wrap and secure it to bowls, Tupperware, cheese, veggies, and leftovers!

If You Care Products

If You Care was the first company in North America to develop unbleached coffee filters, and has since developed countless eco-friendly household products. Their product lineup includes reusable paper towels, laundry detergent, 100% recycled aluminum foil, and much more! The company believes in reducing the amount of waste in our waste streams, and continues to offer incredible eco-friendly products for our homes! I love their aluminum foil, sandwich bags, and trash bags.

If I’m going to use single use items, I can at least rest easy knowing that these products are made of recycled materials that can be re-recycled or composted.

Diffuser with Essential Oils

Essential oils are known to help prevent sickness and purify the air. Using a diffuser helps spread the oils throughout your home creating a calming and relaxing environment. Many oils are antibacterial and will absorb viruses while simultaneously boosting your immune system. Plus, they smell good!

Fridge Purifier

Adding a purifier to your refrigerator will sanitize and purify the air within your refrigerator helping keep your food clean and safe for your family! The purifier provides a fresh, clean environment for fruits and veggies while also eliminating odors.

Air Purifier

Have you thought about the air you breathe as something that is potentially toxic to your family? Skipping out on plastic use, switching to healthier food choices, and opting for natural remedies are great ways to detoxify our lives, but we should not forget about the air! The air around us can be filled with chemicals, and can contain allergens that are irritating to the lungs and harmful to our health. Air purifiers help remove viruses, allergens, odors, and harmful gasses. Using an air purifier (or adding some house plants!) is a great way to detoxify your home!

Castile Soap

Cleaning products can be full of unnecessary chemicals! I have found that using Castile soap is a wonderful alternative for nearly all of my cleaning needs. I use Castile soap for my hands, dishes, laundry, body, pets, fruits & veggies, and so much more! It is one of my favorite green cleaning products that I use in my home!

Making small changes this year to live healthier lives doesn’t have to be overly complicated! Start with one simple swap and go from there. For more green living ideas, visit my blog, Boxwood Avenue!

6 Tips for a Healthy Winter Home https://theinspiredhome.com/articles/6-tips-for-a-healthy-winter-home/ Fri, 04 Jan 2019 20:02:41 +0000 https://theinspiredhome.flywheelsites.com/2019/01/04/6-tips-for-a-healthy-winter-home/ Take charge of cold & flu season.

The post 6 Tips for a Healthy Winter Home appeared first on The Inspired Home.

]]>
My husband was at the airport last week. He texted me that the woman next to him was coughing. And so was the next person who sat down. So I told him to move and that I was taking him going to make him walk through the car wash in 30 degree weather when he got home. You know… out of love (and self-preservation). While there’s a lot you can’t control during cold and flu season, there are some things you can do to keep your home a healthy space.

Always wash your hands.

Period. End of story. Washing your hands (or if you’re out, using hand sanitizer as a back up) is your best defense during cold and flu season. Make the act of washing your hands appealing. Get a soap dispenser you like and is easy to wipe down. Use soap that has a great scent. My personal favorite is Mrs. Meyer’s honeysuckle scent. It’s routine in our house as soon as we come home to wash our hands and occasionally wipe down our phones.

Outside stays outside.

If you want to go one step further, and trust me — I understand this is not practical sometimes —change when you get home if you’ve been near someone who is just generously sharing their cough/sneeze. Keep that outside yuck off of your couch and bed and put it in the laundry basket. Don’t put your purse or coat on the kitchen counter either. And if you want to be poetic about it, you can use changing into house clothes as a wind down ritual.

Plants forever.

Depending on where you live, you could be experiencing minor seasonal affective disorder during winter. Here in the Mid-Atlantic the shift that happens in December and January is… disgusting. The green is gone. It’s dark at 4:30. I thrive on the outdoors and greenery. If you’re the same, and you miss greens, bring the outdoors in. For the holiday we hung an evergreen chandelier that smelled amazing. But day to day, potted plants can help clean your air and researchers at the University of Melbourne even found that looking at natural vegetation restores a person’s attention span (Lee, Williams, Sargent, Williams, & Johnson). Not so good at keeping plants alive? Buy some cut flowers for a little dose of happy. It doesn’t need to be a full bouquet. I’m a fan of slender vases and bud vases that let a few stems shine.

Ditch dry air.

A humidifier can help treat skin dryness but also dryness associated with your nose throat and lips. If you’re already sick (bummer) it can also help ease symptoms of a cold or flu. Since we live in an old house which are especially notorious for having dry air, a humidifier is a quick fix adjustment. Just plug it in and go. I’m particularly taken with this Swiss designed Stadler Form OSKAR LITTLE Humidifier which is sleek, small and white and allows you to add an essential oil!

Vitamin C made easy.

I have to add my dietitian caveat here. While there’s currently no evidence Vitamin C prevents the common cold, we do know that research suggests it could help shorten the length of a cold or the severity of a cold if it’s consumed before you get sick. You know what has a ton of vitamin C? Citrus. One medium sized orange contains over 100% of your daily needs for vitamin C. Luckily, citrus season is smack in the middle of cold season. Put out a variety of citrus in a basket on the counter for easy snacking. We’re a fan of satsuma oranges which will change your life if you’ve never had them before.

Illness prevention and recovery confined.

Listen. We already talked about how you can do somethings, but not everything, to prevent illness. Have a little kit ready that contains things to ease symptoms, but also clean as needed in one tidy holder. Things like tissues, cold and flu symptom medication, hand wipes, new lip balm and a cell phone charger in one area will make it easy to park it next to you on the couch or bed while you recover.

Here’s to a healthy winter season. May you find oranges in bulk at your local Costco.

Every parent wants happy and healthy kids. Kids that enjoy life and are thriving. During the year, I try my best to keep my kids healthy with these mindful and healthy habits. One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to parenting and neither should your healthy habits. But with a few tips, I hope you can start to feel confident enough to take charge of your family’s health and well-being!

Wash Your Hands

Keeping my kids’ hands washed is my number one priority when it comes to keeping them healthy. At home, they wash their hands several times during the day to keep any germs that they may have picked up, from spreading. Automatic soap dispensers like this one from simplehuman help with my efforts. All they do is put their hands under the pump and they receive a generous amount of soap for hand washing without spreading any germs.

Clean Up the Air

With a couple of asthmatics in our household (myself included) I’m alway trying to improve the air quality in our home. During the cold and flu season, this is even more important to prevent upper respiratory infections. Because allergens can increase our asthma symptoms, I decided on this Winix air purifier. With a 5-stage air purification system, a certified HEPA filter and an app that I can use to monitor the filters, air quality and even schedules, it was an easy pick for us!

While we can’t see or control every single toxin in our home, getting an air purifier in the bedroom is one of the best things we can do for our kids health and to promote better sleep. This little unit purifies up to 400 square feet which is perfect for my boys room and girls room.

Healthy Snacks

Immune boosting snacks are also on my mommy list for keeping the kids at their best! Anything with vitamin-C, is a must for us! My kids aren’t picky eaters so apples, cheese, crackers and oranges are just some of the things they enjoy! I also keep them hydrated with their own Zoku tumblers. It keeps their water cold all day! Plus it helps with the dishes which I think every mother can appreciate!

Exercise

When it comes to being active, my kids are always encouraged to participate in any sport or physical activity that they find fun. For my boys it’s flag football, baseball and basketball throughout the year. For my little girl, dancing and cheering, two times a week keeps her out of the house and engaged with friends. According to KidsHealth.org, kids who are physically active are more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful! Plus exercise also helps kids sleep better.

Vitamins

I try to keep all of our kid friendly vitamins and supplements together in a clear container for easy access. These storage boxes from InterDesign are perfect for medicines and other supplements. If I see the kids coming on with something I make sure to use our supplements like elderberry and everyday multi-vitamins to help fight off any colds or coughs until we can make it in to the doctor.

Schedules

It’s possible for kids to be too busy and not busy enough. For our family, we are always adding to and taking away activities depending on the season. Each child is different, but I think all parents can agree that keeping kids engaged in community clubs, service, hobbies and sports is almost always a good idea. If you allow media during the week (tablets, phones, computers, video games, etc.), HealthyChildren.org suggests that you address what type of media and how much they are allowed. They also suggest to be consistent on your limits each day and make it apart of their schedules so they know what to expect.

We are always finding ways to improve the overall health for our kids. As parents like you and I, pediatricians and researchers continue in this common goal, let’s always try to foster good and healthy habits for our children in hopes to give them an environment to thrive in.

Non-Traditional Flower Arrangements for When You Can’t Find a Vase https://theinspiredhome.com/articles/non-vase-floral-arrangements/ Wed, 27 Sep 2017 19:47:03 +0000 https://theinspiredhome.flywheelsites.com/2017/09/27/non-vase-floral-arrangements/ No vase? No problem.

The post Non-Traditional Flower Arrangements for When You Can’t Find a Vase appeared first on The Inspired Home.

]]>
For the longest time, arranging your own flowers seemed like quite the task. I would always be amazed when friends put together beautiful centerpiece for dinners (hostess goals, right?), but whenever I attempted my own DIY floral arrangement with flowers from the grocery store, they usually looked haphazardly put together and promptly died within days. Rather than giving up completely (and believe me, it was tempting…) I decided to take a flower arranging class a few months ago to make my not-so-pretty grocery store bouquets look somewhat professional. And honestly, it was totally worth the investment, and probably the best $60 I’ve ever spent.

Since then, I’ve been buying loads of $5 flowers at the grocery store and putting them together in gorgeous centerpieces, bouquets, and other arrangements for friends, family, and dinner parties whenever I attempt to throw them. And now that I’m beginning to master the DIY flower arrangement, I’ve decided it’s time to challenge myself again by trading in traditional vases for some new exciting ones. I’ve always been a collector of jars, jugs, pitchers and mason jars, so I’ve been experimenting with different pieces I’ve already had at home and turning them into unexpected vases for my new floral arranging hobby. Here are a few of my favorite flower arranging tips I’ve learned along the way so far!

Try a Ginger Jar:

Ginger jars have been making a comeback over the past few years, and I’ve found myself gravitating toward them at flea markets and stores around town. What started with a single ginger jar has quickly spiraled into my own collection with varying sizes and patterns (but always with the characteristic white and blue palette). I recently picked up this large ginger jar and realized it would be the perfect size for a flower arrangement on my dining room table. And while I’m still a novice, it was one of my favorite arrangements to date.

I picked flowers that would correspond nicely with the deep cobalt blue color (light greens and pinks) as well as some pretty blue hydrangeas to tie the arrangement together. One important flower arranging tip I learned from my class is that hydrangeas last longer if you cut a one inch slit down the stem (towards the flower), and when you place them in room temperature water. No wonder my hydrangeas used to die in a span of 12 hours after I brought them home!

Try a Pitcher:

Pitchers get all the glory for being utilitarian, but they also make pretty makeshift vases for freshly picked flowers. From ceramic to copper versions, they’re the perfect size and shape for a stunning centerpieces filled to the brim with farmer’s market flowers or your own blooms from the garden. Whenever putting together your own arrangement (and especially with pitchers that sometimes have limited room), make sure to put in the largest flowers first and then fill in the rest of the arrangement with accent flowers – like clover, greens, and berries.

Try an Unexpected Shape:

When you want to get a little creative, try some unexpected shapes to give your flower arrangement a little more character! I had this pineapple container I bought for punches a few months ago, and it doubled as the perfect vase for a bunch of spray roses I picked up at the grocery store. I love the monochromatic look of yellow flowers with the pineapple shape, and it’s quickly become a revolving arrangement on my living room table (especially since spray roses are always such a steal!) When arranging roses, make them last longer by cutting their stems with a slight diagonal cut and to peel off most of the leaves before placing them in the vase. It will make the roses live longer and also help to avoid too many leaves rotting in the vase in the coming days.

I’m planning to keep experimenting with non-traditional vases in the coming months, but in the meantime I’d love to know your tips and tricks too. Are there any non-traditional vases you’ve put your favorite bouquets in? I’m always looking for a new trend to try!

Eating well – especially when we’re always go go go – requires good quality ingredients, portion control, and healthy cooking methods.

It can be a lot to keep up with and I’ve found having helpful kitchen tools makes this whole eating well thing much simpler. It takes away my ability to make excuses to order in or dine out, or eat peanut butter, cheese and crackers for dinner.

I know the basics of eating well and I’m a competent cook, but once I upgraded my kitchen with a few handy tools, I’ve noticed a shift in what we’re eating. It is healthier; we’re getting more of the good stuff in and feel better, too.

Here’s what I’ve added:

Water Filtration System

I’ve always wanted to get a proper filtration system for the house. When I looked into it, I found that many needed to be installed and that didn’t suit my needs – I don’t have time for any sort of installation or reno work right now, thanks! Instead, I opted for this Aquasana Clean Water Machine, which filters water at the touch of a button and is 10x stronger and lasts 8x longer than other pitchers. It can keep water at room temperature (which I prefer) and it also comes with a separate pitcher, which can quickly be filtered and then placed in the fridge for cold water (which Chad, my husband, prefers…<shudders>).

Air Fryer

For speed and crispiness, nothing beats frying foods. However, the waistline doesn’t agree with this cooking method. I had been hearing about these from friends of mine and decided to try one myself, in search of that coveted crisp without food being drenched in oil. The beauty of the air fryer is that it requires significantly less oil yet cooks food quickly and provides a nice crispy finish. I made a batch of sweet potato fries yesterday and it took 12 minutes and required one teaspoon of oil. It was glorious. Needless to say, it’s been a staple small appliance in this house. I always tell Chad that when we have kids, this is going to be the saving grace of dinnertime.

Slow Juicer

I’m in love with all things fruit and vegetable and get my 5-10 in each day no problem. Chad on the other hand, doesn’t have as strong a sentiment toward them. Recently he turned 40 and became increasingly cognizant of his nutrient intake and noticed he wasn’t getting what he needed. He attested this to the lack of fruits and veggies in his diet. So to make sure he gets what he needs (since I know he won’t be crunching on crudités) I got a Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer and we’ve made all sorts of delicious concoctions adding in ginger, beets, cucumber, celery, apples, carrots, and parsley to name a few. The juice is just heavenly, and the slow masticating juicer means you squeeze the most juice and nutrients out of the fruit or veggie. He gets what he needs each day in a perfectly delicious juice. I also like how it came with cleaning tools! That’s a plus since juicers have a reputation for being tough to clean.

Digital Food Scale

This is perfect for those times when I don’t trust myself to ‘eyeball’ something. Case in point, we just found out that one of our cats, Malee, is almost 20 pounds (she should be 12). The vet instructed us to place her on a strict diet and feed her 3.5 ounces of wet food twice daily. Sure thing, doc, but since I have no clue 3.5 ounces of wet cat food looks like, I needed a digital scale. Not only does it make sense for kitty weight loss programs, but I find that when I cook a recipe and it calls for specific weight measurements, nothing helps more than a digital food scale . It’s easy to use, easy to store, easy to clean and accurate. I love this one by Kalorik, it also matches my kitchen décor. My cat on the other hand, well, she probably has words for it.

Oil Mister

I have never been a fan of cooking sprays. I can’t put my finger on the reason, but I’ve always preferred just brushing oil on if needed. My issue with that method is that sometimes, too much oil goes on the food when all I really needed was a light spray. Less oil means less calories and better dispersion of the oil for improved cooking. I’ve picked up the Cole & Mason Stainless Steel Oil and Vinegar Mister and I now use it daily. I’ve filled it with grapeseed oil, which is preferable to olive oil for high heat cooking. It is easy to use and the mister actually works — I like that it can be pumped up to build pressure first, which helps mist go the distance.

Vacuum Sealing System

This is something Chad and I have wanted in the kitchen for years. Not only is the Food Saver Vacuum Sealing System great for prepping great meals ahead of time – portioning out and seasoning meat with marinade, making it really easy to pull out and cook when we need it – to storing batch cooked food in frozen portions or keeping refrigerated food fresh, this machine helps us eat in more when we don’t have time. It’s certainly easier to resist the urge to dine out and eat something convenient and less healthy.

We all know that clean air and water are important to maintaining good health. But the reality is, there’s a lot more pollution in our daily intake than you may realize – and you don’t have to live in or near a city to feel the effects.

As a mom, I think about this a lot. I want to make sure that I’m doing what I can to create a home that allows for optimal breathing and sleep habits — the wrong humidity levels and air pollutants can wreak havoc on a good night’s sleep. Plus the idea of drinking pollutants (or showering in them) is just icky — with all the pollutants outside our home, why open the door and let them in?

So today, I’m sharing a few gadgets that can help you measure and regulate the amount of pollution in your home’s air and water supply. Even if you or your family members don’t have conditions like asthma that are visibly aggravated by poor air or water quality, it’s always a good idea to keep your intake in check. Here are six tech-smart ways to do it.

BONECO Hybrid Humidifier & HEPA Air Purifier H680, $229

Equipped with a HEPA active carbon filter (stands for high-efficiency particulate arrestance — AKA, the best at pulling ick from the air), this humidifier-purifier hybrid has built-in sensors to measure air quality and can be controlled with a remote. Considering most of the purifiers out there are around $500 or more, this is an affordable option for those wanting basic everyday filtration that’s reliable and tech-forward.

Crane smartAIR Purifier, $549

If you’re partial to app-controlled devices like I am, this is a solid pick. Not only can you control this purifier from anywhere via WiFi, it has a four-step filtration system that captures nearly 100 percent of airborne odors and allergens, a particle and VOC sensor system, and a HEPA filter on board. Breathe deep.

AIRMEGA 300S The Smarter Air Purifier, $649

Another great app-enabled option, the AIRMEGA 300S is Energy Star certified (read: eco-friendly) and has a two-step filtration system that first traps light odors, then handles allergens and airborne particles. To boost efficiency, it automatically changes the filter speeds and has a shut-off timer mode.

Objecto W4 Hybrid Humidifier, $284

By far one of the chicest humidifiers you’ll come across, the Objecto W4 hybrid is as affordable as it is design-friendly. Though it isn’t app-enabled (remote control only), the built-in aromatherapy option is a definite bonus you’ll look forward to coming home to.

Winix HR1000 5-Stage WiFi Enabled Air Cleaner , $350

The Winix has a built-in air quality indicator and is WiFi and remote control-enabled like some of the other models I’ve mentioned, but also has a unique five-stage air cleaning process that includes a pre-filter, HEPA and carbon filters, and CleanCel and Plasmawave technologies. In other words, no allergens are getting past this guy. Oh, and it’s Energy Star rated, too.

AquaBoy® Pro II Air to Water Generator , $1849

I’ve devoted a lot of time to air purification here, but clean water is just as important. This generator pulls water from the air and purifies it for a variety of home uses, which is great news for our increasingly scarce underground water resources (especially in drought-riddled California, where I live). It’s got a hefty price tag, but consider that it produces up to five gallons of purified hot and cold water per day and works by simply plugging it into a 120V receptacle (no installation or plumbing required) — a great alternative to buying bottled water for the family each week, and a lot better for the environment, too.

Your home is a mirror of your life. That’s a fundamental principle in the ancient art of feng shui.

Many of us strive for greater wellness, yet it’s not all that common to realize that your environment plays a huge part in that wellness. When your home is clear of toxins and full of tools that support your wellbeing, it’s very natural and intuitive to stick to your diet plans, feel more energized and live with more clear-minded inspiration!

Let’s get started with some small switches that have a big environmental impact:

1. Take your shoes off.

Detoxing your home of common chemicals and pollutants will go a long way in supporting all your overall vibrant health, and taking your shoes off before you enter your house can eliminate a ton of chemicals, allergens, dirt, pesticides and even lead from your life. A shoe rack in a closet or a shoe cabinet is a brilliant way to start a home-detoxifying habit!

2. Clear your clutter.

Did you know that household clutter can contribute to increased stress and cortisol, weight gain, depression, anxiety and can even impact the immune system? Every day, tackle a bit of your clutter and clear it away and you’ll be building a home where abundant fresh energy can flow freely!

3. Really purify your water.

Even in our most modern cities, the infrastructure of our plumbing from water supplies is aging, and chemicals and leaks can seep into our tap water. It’s vital to filter and purify our drinking water, even for cooking and always for pets. The Aquasana Clean Water Machine is my latest discovery to make super-purified water easy. 10 times more metal, lead, chlorine and pharmaceutical residues are removed than with a basic filter machine. You simply fill a pitcher, snap it on its base, plug in the machine then press a button for instantly clean water!

4. Add life to your water!

Our bodies are meant to absorb and assimilate “living” water that is full of energy, like the pure water running in streams. One suggestion I learned from Anthony William, Medical Medium is to put some lemon or lime in your water to bring more “life” to it. For a next-level experience of hydration, the purifying and energizing power of Tribest Life Water Revitalizer is my favorite daily indulgence. I pour in water from my Aquasana machine and turn it on to spin, infusing the water with alkaline minerals from its internal mineral basket.

5. Cook in Clay.

Slow cookers are a fantastic way to make more healing soups, broths, stews and nutritionally-rich dishes, but a clay pot slow cooker (yes, it’s a clay pot inside the cooker!) takes slow-cooking to great heights! The VitaClay slow cooker is a boost of eco-friendly nutritional and culinary genius to your kitchen. Not only is the clay pot non-toxic, it increases the bioavailability of the nutrients of food you cook in it! Bone broths and detox soups are my favorite ways to experience VitaClay clay pot cooking.

6. Go Green with your cookware.

Non-stick pans are useful and convenient and I really like the new crop of eco-friendly ones such as Bialetti Terra Cotta pans. They offer great performance, durability and are so easy to clean.

7. Add some powerful green juice.

Wheatgrass juice is a detoxifying, healing nutritional-powerhouse of a juice that can purify blood, increase your vitality and flood your body with energy. It’s also something we need to drink right after it’s juiced, so it’s best to grow a tray of grass and get a simple wheatgrass juicer! Weston Stainless Steel Wheatgrass Juicer is a simple way to get your daily shot of wheatgrass, mounted easily on your kitchen counter.

8. Steam things clean & fresh.

Not only can you “iron” your clothes with a steam cleaner quite brilliantly, the super-hot steam with help remove odors, allergens and germs looming in your fabrics like curtains and throw pillows that are difficult to clean. Salav’s Garment Steamer with Woven Hose fills with distilled water and gives you 50 minutes of steam-cleaning power per tank, enough to get your drapes sparkling and your dresses and jackets freshly pressed!

9. Add more fruit and veggies.

Filling your home with fresh fruit and veggies that you love is a great way to amplify the glow of your whole lifestyle. If you have trouble figuring out how to snack on them, a food dehydrator can be a revolution. A big one — like the Weston 80 Liter Dehydrator — can help you make volumes of long-lasting veggie and fruit chips, fresh fruit rollups and even crackers that are full of enzymes and nutrients and free of preservatives.

A healthier home is the mirror of a more vital and thriving life, so embrace whatever switches you can make- you can start with one new saucepan or some green juice — and let the momentum grow. Simple switches can revitalize your environment and usher in so much more freshness and flowing energy!

A sore throat is often the result of a cold, allergies, a viral infection, dry air, pollution or overuse such as excessive talking or singing. A sore throat may cause pain, itching, irritation or may make it difficult to eat or swallow food & liquids. The truth is, no one enjoys a sore throat! Today I’m sharing tips to help you sooth your sore throat, naturally!

Humidifier

Dry air from cold weather or air-conditioning can aggravate a sore throat. Humidifiers are an excellent way to increase the humidity (also known as moisture) in your room, house or office. Humidifiers are easy are a great way to add moisture to the air!

Diffuser

Diffusers are also great! A diffuser is smaller than a humidifier, yet also adds moisture to the air. A diffuser is convenient to place on desk, counter top of bedside table. Fill a diffuser with filtered water and also essential oils to naturally scent a room as well as diffuse nourishing compounds into the air. For example, eucalyptus oil is believed to help lessen congestion. Lavender oil is great for helping to calm & reduce stress.

Steam

A sore throat can also be the result of nasal congestion or a post nasal drip. It’s easy to create an at home “steam room” with a pot of hot water & a towel! To get started, heat filtered water in a pot, then transfer to a table or counter on a safe surface. You can steam with just hot water or add a drop of essential oil to breath in, such as eucalyptus oil! Then place a linen over your head and lean over the pot of steamy water. The linen will help trap in the steam. Breathe deep & enjoy the warm steam for 3 — 10 minutes. Be careful because steam can be very hot!! Be careful to heat the water, not boil & also keep your face at a safe distance from the pot of hot water. Never steam over a stovetop with the stove on.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated is crucial when you are feeling under the weather & when experiencing a sore throat. Filtered water is best however you can also enjoy hot lemon water, decaffeinated herbal teas and fresh fruit juice to hydrate. Tea is also a fantastic way to nourish the body!

Below are some great teas to enjoy when experiencing a sore throat or feeling under the weather:

Licorice Root has anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce swelling, irritation, and soothe the mucus membranes in your throat.

Chamomile is a naturally antibacterial, and is often used as a painkiller and muscle relaxer, not to mention it is delicious!

Ginger has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Ginger has a spicy flavor profile that can help open sinuses and break down mucus. Ginger can also help improve blood circulation, improve digestion and reduce nausea or an upset stomach.

Cinnamon contains anti-oxidants and also has a spicy flavor profile that can help to open up the sinuses.

Honey has antibacterial properties and may help coat the throat when it is dry. Be sure to select raw local honey and be aware that some people, especially small children may have an allergy to it.

Lemons once consumed have an alkaline effect on the body, which can you’re your balance PH levels, which is great for overall health! Add a slice of organic lemon to hot water or a cup of tea and enjoy!

Rest

Last but not least, when you’re not feeling your best rest is best. When you sleep your body has time to heal & repair. Take it easy & we hope you feel better soon!

Scent is one of our most complex senses. Scents trigger memories, affect our moods, and even affect our physical state and our energy itself.

It amazes me that it’s taken so long for aromatherapy to become more accessible outside of “healing” circles and health food shops since the science behind the power of scent is so profound.

If you’ve been intimidated by tiny, exotic-looking bottles of essential oils, when you’re done reading this today I hope you grab yourself a bottle or two and bravely dive into this life-changing natural-fragrance magic!

Here are my favorite ways to weave layers of aromatherapy through the day:

  • In the morning, peppermint essential oil is a winner in the shower. I drop a few drops in the corner of the shower before I jump in and the steam fills the air- and my whole body, with energizing scent that can make you feel physically ultra-strong and alive! Add eucalyptus essential oil if you have a headache, cold or a hangover to add some purification to the aromatherapy mix.
  • At work, cinnamon tea helps me percolate ideas and feel more grounded during stressful days. A spoon of honey + a sprinkle of cinnamon + hot water = perfection!
  • I cover my wrists in lavender oil during breaks in the day and breathe deeply as I take a walk. It’s the best energy reset I can imagine.
  • Rose is my go-to scent for calming and beauty mixes. I use a few drops of rose oil straight on my face at night mixed into some coconut oil to moisturize. It’s also amazing for hair!
  • Jasmine essential oil can help you sleep more deeply, so if you sleep enough and still feel groggy, you can sprinkle some under your pillow.

Now, for some fun tools to make your aromatherapy adventure brighter!

Scent has a perimeter. When you use essential oils, they’ll spread scent as far as you diffuse the molecules. For instance, if you keep a small vial un-capped, it’s not likely to infuse the room with fragrance, but you’ll smell it when you’re up close to the bottle.

This is why I love the USB/Car Stellar diffuser by Serene House that doubles as a car diffuser. In the car, I can add a calming pre-mixed Rejuvenate blend of essential oils in traffic, plugged into my car jack. And at my computer at home and anywhere I go, I can plug this diffuser into my USB port loaded up with a focus-promoting Forest Breeze energy blend.

You can also diffuse a more broad area of your home with fragrance to purify and alter the mood of a room. The chic Serene House Lantern II Scentilizer can fill your bedroom with rose oil, sandalwood or anything your heart desires while it glows with light…!

For a more potent blast of aromatherapy along with moisture to really blanket a room in freshness, this Objecto H3 Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier will ensure that only fresh water and potent aromatherapy flood your home with lush fragrance.

If you aren’t bold enough to get going yet with the essential oils, you can always try my cinnamon tea for a bump of creativity, fresh mint or ginger in hot water to rev up some energy… or… my all time best friend in relaxation: an herbal wrap. This wrap from Herbal Concepts will infuse the air around you with floral, herbal calm while it soothes tension and helps you to feel fantastic! Pop it in a microwave for a minute and you have an ultra-soothing relaxation remedy to take the tension out of life.

From tea and fresh flowers to a full-spectrum of essential oils and awesome innovations to use them, there’s always a perfect way to shape, lighten and empower your day with luscious aromatherapy.
